Day 73 - Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Daily stats
Start:
6:50 AM - CapeRomano (south of Marco Island, FL)
Finish:
3:20 PM – HighlandBeach (23 miles SE of Chokoloskee, FL)
Time:
8:30
Daily dist: 42 miles
Total dist: 2,072 miles
Companions: None
Notes:  Clear with a strong tailwind. Gusts over 25 mph.

Jake is in another ecologically fascinating place.  Ten thousand islands are home to endless mangroves, sawfish, goliath groupers, manatees, roseate spoonbills, American crocodiles, and deafening swarms of mosquitoes.  Except for the wind, his winter visit should keep him relatively comfortable.  His next blog transmission will most likely be in ~3 days when he reaches Key Largo (weather notwithstanding).

Hey Jake, you'll be paddling right past our door here in Fort Pierce, FL. Let me know of any shore-side support we can provide. It'll be great to see you again!

Jake, these are exciting times as your Spot tracker shows you "rounding the corner" in FL I can only imagine how beautiful the everglades must be from your perspective. Looking forward to you next report.

Steve Krause sent me this email... Not only does Jake have to worry about alligators in the Everglades. He also has to worry about Burmese pythons, Florida panthers, fierce Seminoles and, of course, Queen sneakes and Gully cats. But, with the way he's going, they'll probably all invite him to stay overnight in a warm bed and take him out to dinner! Thought you'd like this one - I had to laugh out loud even though I was home alone when I read this email.

Again, Dad and I are very very proud of you and enjoy listening to people talking about you. We also enjoy bragging you up when we get a chance. Like I said before - I make up reasons to brag about you. Take care and hopefully you'll be able to get a blog or two out of the wilderness this week. We love you.

I should've listened to Mrs Mangold when I took typing in highschool - never thought there would come a day when I'd need to know or want to know how to type. OK, it's not Queen sneaks that you have to look out for, it's Queen Snakes! There - that's fixed!

Lyn, thanks for sharing the email. I got a big laugh out of it, but the way things have been going for him, who knows? Hi to Dave, too. Tootie

Hi Jake,

I just returned from an expedition in the Everglades in January. what an amazing place. My group and I did 200 miles starting and ending in Everglades city, and I must say that the Highland Beach campsite was one of our favorites. I would love to do a large East coast expedition like yours and hope ill get the chance.

good luck and safe travels

Cheers
