Day 193

6/16/2010

Daily stats
Start: 7:15 AM - Newburgh, NY
Finish: 3:45 PM - Esopus Meadows, NY
Time: 8:30
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick
Weather: Overcast with one spell of rain for about a half hour temps in the low 70s
Notes: Into fresh water for the rest of the trip.
Knowing that the tide would be working against us for the first six hours of the day, we figured sacrificing one mile per hour of progress was preferable to sitting around in camp until noon waiting for the tide to change. Thus we set out at just after seven this morning and made but steady progress past small river towns with a sprinkling of industry as headed upstream on the outgoing tide.

Bill in front of one of the most beautiful boat houses I've ever seen. Complete with a iron peacock gate and fireplace inside.
With the first day of summer rapidly approaching, and established camp sites as our daily destination, making slow progress (at least slower than I’m used to) is not worrisome at all. It’s that lack of worries, combined with stunningly beautiful scenery and great weather, that has made the last three days of paddling on the Hudson some of the best I’ve had so far. Even though yesterday’s camp site was amazing and tonight’s site pretty darn nice too, Bill promises that I may find tomorrow night’s camp to be even better. I can’t wait to see it.

Hmm .. is anyone seeing Spot locations? The last location I see is from Rhode Island, nothing along the Hudson. I hope this is not another bad Spot device.

I am currently working with the SPOT people and they are doing their best to make sure Jake has a new device ASAP.

With luck, Jake will be marking his progress by Sunday!

Aaron, we have a West Marine in Latham, near where Jake will be on Friday if that helps. Also a couple of EMS stores nearby. I expect to paddle with him on Friday, but will be around tomorrow if I can help out.

My hotel is on standby to hold a package from SPOT in Rochester, so we can drop it off to Jake on Sunday when we drive Otto to catch up with him. Also left a note on SPOT's FB page.

Larry, can you e-mail me the address of the hotel so I can give it to the SPOT people when I talk to them tomorrow?

adstove@yahoo.com

Like I said above, SPOT is working with me and they want to get Jake back up ASAP - lets not flood their FB page just yet :)

Just sent the address, sorry I didn't see this earlier. And no I am not flooding the SPOT page with complaints.

A BIG shout out to BayCreek Paddling Center in Rochester. They are hooking Otto up with a boat and GP for his part of the trip with Jake. Really cool staff to work with and very interested in Jake's adventure.

If you are in western NY, give them a holler. Reminds me of Jake's previous shop, Aqua Adventures, a bunch of paddlers running a business rather than a big box shop. BayCreek is also on FB.

Bay Creek are great folks! I've bought two boats from them and live near Albany about 4.5 hours away. Glad they are able to help you and Otto out!

If Jake is in the vicinity of Athens Friday night, he is welcome to spend the night on Henry Hudson's replica ship, the Half Moon. She is moored on the west side of the river in Athens just North of the Hudson-Athens lighthouse. A few of the crew (myself included) will be aboard. If not, we will be sailing on the river Saturday
